When I graduated from college trained as a biology teacher in 1964 I knew that science provided the tools for people to live better lives through improved health care, more wholesome and affordable food and--for what would soon become a post-industrial Ohio--a stronger and more diverse economy.
Since then, involved as I have been in the administration of a local community college and then as a representative from district 62 to the Ohio House of Representatives for seven years and into the new millennium, I have seen all of these things and so much more come to pass. As an educator and policy-maker I have been able to help listen to my fellow Ohioans and help guide this process.
Over the last several years as it has had to grapple with funding problems, the high expectations of No Child Left Behind and the standards-based testing it requires, and the challenges of charter and voucher options in public education, I have grown dismayed at the ongoing inability of our state Board of Education to play the advocacy role for your children and their education that only it can and must.
A state's Board of Education should provide a clear and consistent message advocating for the best possible education for all of our children in all districts. The Board is the natural "lobby" for children to our legislature and the governor's office. I have served in the Ohio legislature, including dedicated service to the House Education Committee. I have been a school administrator and a teacher. I have raised my own children and guided and paid for their education. As a minority member of the Ohio legislature I have demonstrated time and again the ability to get things done for the people of Ohio even amidst the conflicting demands and interests of some fellow decision-makers.
I want to bring these experiences and skills to our state Board of Education. Our children and the future of our great state demand nothing less. I respectfully ask for your support and your vote.
